How to play

  1. 1Press Play a friend. You get a room with a link and a 4-letter code. Send either one to your friend.
  2. 2Your friend opens it and picks a name. Nobody signs up for anything. Change the match settings if you like, then both press Ready.
  3. 3You both see the same flag at the same moment. Type the country, or tap one of four names if the room is set to 4 choices. The first right answer scores. A wrong typed guess locks your box for 3 seconds and tells you how far off you were and which way to go.
  4. 4The first to reach the target wins. From the end screen, either of you can ask for a rematch with the same settings.

Tips for beating a friend

  • Learn the look-alikes. Chad and Romania, Indonesia and Monaco, and Ireland and Ivory Coast are easy to mix up.
  • Use the hint after a wrong guess. It tells you how far off you were and which way to go, so your next guess can jump to the right part of the world.
  • Look for symbols. A star, a crescent or an eagle narrows a flag down fast.

Questions

How do I play a flag game with a friend?

Press Play a friend. You get a room with a link and a 4-letter code. Send either one to your friend. They open it, pick a name and join, and the match starts when you've both pressed Ready.

Do we need accounts? Is it free?

It's free, and neither of you needs an account or a download. You play in the browser, on a phone or a computer. You each get a random name like Swift Otter, and you can change it.

Can we pick from choices instead of typing?

Yes. In the room settings, set Answer by to 4 choices. You both see the same four names and race to tap the right one. A wrong tap puts you out for that flag, so be sure before you tap.

What do "First to" and "Both can score" mean?

First to is how many flags you need to win: 3, 5, 7 or 10. Normally the first right answer takes the point and the flag is over. With Both can score on, the other player then gets 10 seconds to get it too, and if they do, you both score. If you both reach the target together, you keep playing until one of you is ahead.

Which flags come up? Can we make it easier?

All 197 countries: the 193 UN members plus Vatican City, Palestine, Kosovo and Taiwan. Whoever makes the room picks a mode: All countries, Easy, Medium, Hard, Insane, Europe or Americas. Flags don't repeat until every flag in the mode has come up. Guess the Flag uses the same flags.

What if one of us loses connection?

The match goes on hold for up to a minute. If your friend comes back, you both carry on after a short countdown, and reloading the page puts you back in your seat. If they don't come back in time, the one who stayed wins.

Can more than two play? Can I play someone new?

Each room is for two players. For a group, everyone can play the daily Guess the Flag and compare results. To play someone you don't know, switch on Let anyone join in the room settings and your room shows up under Open rooms. Otherwise a room is private, and only people with your link or code can get in.
